Back in 1994, this was perfect antidote to the all-conquering Forrest Gump: a pair of good old-fashioned idiots without the slightest hint of savant about them, whose stupidity provides absolutely no insights whatsoever into the human condition. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) is Rhode Island’s most irritating limo driver while dishevelled Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) is a mobile dog groomer. When they’re both fired for gross incompetence, Lloyd persuades Harry to drive 2,000 miles to Aspen in his amusing doggy-shaped Mutt Cuts van in the hope of securing a date with his last fare, classy babe Lauren Holly.
What passes for a plot is simply a mechanism to showcase Carrey’s gurning antics. In this, he’s assisted by a script ripe with quickfire humour and one of the most extraordinary haircuts in movie history: a Mr Spock-meets-Elton John affair. The only real surprise is how well Daniels matches Carrey stupidity for stupidity as his shambling oaf of a sidekick. If you’re in the mood for monumentally infantile fart gags, urine-drinking gags, redneck sodomy gags, dead bird gags, chilli-eating gags and driving-500-miles-in-the-wrong-direction gags, you may well wet yourself laughing.
