Back in 2011, Mexican director Gerardo Naranjo gave us the original Miss Bala: a cracking thriller based on the true story of a beauty queen who gets sucked into the cross-border drug trafficking trade.
Gina Rodriguez stars in this belated US remake, which is another dud from Catherine Hardwicke, who made her name with Thirteen. In her hands, it becomes an unconvincing fable of empowerment. US critics were not kind. “Gina Rodriguez: you deserve so much better than this,” observed one.
