This live-action remake of the popular Japanese cyberpunk manga from Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders got caught up in the ‘Joseph Fiennes as Michael Jackson’ controversy recently when it was accused of ‘whitewashing’ in casting conspicuously Caucasian Scarlett Johansson in the lead role of a counter-cyberterrorist taking on a dastardly digital wrong’ un.
But the real question is whether it’ll satisfy the super-critical nerds who are its core audience. Early indications are that Sanders has stuck very closely to the style of the original film – which, of course, raises the ‘Why bother?’ question.
