Exploring the ‘crisis of masculinity’

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Oct 21, 2022

Lewis Wedlock describes patriarchal masculinity as “a fungus in society”.

It’s an issue he explores in his TEDx talk that looks at the impact on people, particularly young men.

But when he’s not reaching out to a national audience, the activist, academic and social psychologist focuses on making a difference at a grassroots level.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Lewis, who lives in Fishponds where he also spent much of his childhood, has been going into secondary schools throughout Black History Month, where he has been exploring issues of race and identity with students.

It’s an extension of the work he does through OTR’s Project Zazi, which focuses on creating opportunities, building aspirations and empowering young Black people. Lewis is also the creative director of Black Bristol, an interactive timeline exploring some of the city’s most important history.

“I don’t think I could ever turn my back on this work,” the 24-year-old tells Bristol24/7.

When he went from student in social psychology to lecturer at UWE Bristol, Lewis became one of the UK’s youngest lecturers.

In the latest Behind the Headlines podcast, Lewis speaks to Bristol24/7 Deputy Editor Ellie Pipe about his journey, race, masculinity, mental health and what keeps him motivated.
