‘You would?never expect it on your?doorstep’
Neighbours have been left in a state of shock after police discovered a body, believed to be of missing teenager Becky Watts, was found at a house in Barton Hill.
Forensic crime teams have been scouring the area for more evidence since the grim discovery was made late on Monday night.
A neighbour who lives close by the house where the body parts were discovered told Bristol24/7: “They have lived there a long time – it’s shocking. You would never have expected it on your doorstep. I didn’t hear anything last night.
“I don’t know their business but you would never have expected it.”
Local Councillor Hibaq Jama said: “It’s really hit the community. It’s shocking, it’s very disturbing. And understandably, parents with children are now anxious about their own children.”
Councillor Jama spoke of how the whole community had gotten behind the campaign to help find Becky, with hundreds of people volunteering in the search.
She continued: “There was a sense that between the police and the public we could put this right. And now without any warning, any hope has been destroyed.
“But I think however bad we feel, our hearts and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.”
Another local resident who did not want to be named said: “I am disgusted by the whole situation. I’m not happy. I’m young and it’s a disgusting situation. I live around the corner and I can’t believe it. I despair at what has happened.”
Local councillor Margaret Hickman spoke of the community’s shock: “People are shocked. And you can see that they’re shocked. I notice that one of the police officers, who I know, his voice just sounds different. Because they’re stunned by what’s happened and that it’s happened here.
“Parents are very, very concerned until they get answers and understand what’s going on. How could this happen, will it happen to my child?
“And it’s so awful about Becky. What a dreadful way to end her life. The light dimmed, blown-out at such a young age.”
