Stokes Croft building becomes community-owned
A building in Stokes Croft has become community-owned after being purchased by a local group.
The Stokes Croft Land Trust (SCLT) has bought People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC) HQ after fundraising £325,880 to acquire the site on Jamaica Street.
SCLT exchanged contracts for the sale on Friday, so it is now legally binding and will be completed within the next two weeks.
More than 400 members invested their money in the trust to make the purchase possible.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the trust wrote: “This is a huge moment for us, and for Stokes Croft.
“We’re now making our dream a reality: pushing back against the threat of gentrification and corporate takeover, & nurturing this wonderful, diverse, cultural, rebellious, independent, creative area. This is just the beginning!”
In August, PRSC, who are based the at building, launched its own crowdfunder to secure its survival in a “particularly perilous time” for the community organisation.
