Signpost to celebrate Bristol’s twin cities

By Alex Seabrook and Martin Booth  Wednesday Mar 27, 2024

A new signpost will be put up on College Green showing the seven cities twinned with Bristol.

The signpost will be paid for by the Guild of Guardians, a charity linked to the lord mayor, and has been designed by an artist who has recreated a typical street sign from each city.

Bristol is twinned with Bordeaux in France, Hannover in Germany, Oporto in Portugal, Tbilisi in Georgia, Puerto Morazan in Nicaragua, Beira in Mozambique and Guangzhou in China.

According to plans submitted by Bristol City Council, the signpost will be erected next to the fountain on the Park Street side of City Hall.

The crests of each twinned city are currently located close by within the paving stones directly in front of the building’s main entrance.

Bristol was one of the first cities to adopt the idea of town twinning to encourage friendship across borders after the Second World War.

We have been twinned with Bordeaux and Hannover since 1947, with the latest twinning arrangement put in place with the south-eastern Chinese city of Guangzhou in 2021.
