Multi-million pound boost for Colston Hall
Colston Hall has been awarded £4.75 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of its £45 million bid to transform the venue.
As part of the overall redevelopment this funding will support the restoration of the Grade II listed Lantern. When it is restored, the building will have fully accessible facilities and education and creative areas.
is needed now More than ever
Louise Mitchell, chief executive of Bristol Music Trust said: “As part of the ambitious transformation project that will see the main hall and cellars completely refurbished, this funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund will allow us to bring our historic Lantern area back to life, allowing more visitors to understand and experience the heritage of our fabulous building.
“Our fundraising campaign will continue and the designs for the building are rapidly taking shape. As the last major concert hall in Britain to be updated, we are now a step closer to giving the people of Bristol and the South West a concert hall of which they can be proud.”
Phil Castang, head of Bristol Plays Music, said: “We are very grateful for this stamp of approval from the Heritage Lottery Fund. After a busy year creating the first citywide music curriculum in the UK, it is very exciting that we are heading strongly towards our goal of giving all children in Bristol the chance to experience innovative educational programmes and to perform music in the world-class facilities that a transformed Colston Hall will provide.”
Just over £30 million has now been raised to restore the Colston Hall. However, Bristol Music Trust still needs to find another £15 million and will launch a public fundraising appeal next year.
