Help transform a disused phone box into a community toy library

By Bristol24/7  Thursday Feb 15, 2018

Engineers, carpenters, glaziers and cast iron welders are needed to help a group of Rainbows from Stoke Gifford renovate a disused phone box near the girls’ meeting place.

The girls hope to fill the repaired phone box with good quality second hand toys and books for children in their local community to borrow.

The idea of converting the phone box came following a visit by 2nd Stoke Gifford Rainbows to the North Bristol Foodbank in Horfield, where the five- and six-year-olds were inspired to do something with a lasting impact for children not as fortunate as themselves.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

They hope to decorate the box with regularly changing themes that spread the word about Girlguiding while also providing a useful service for families in the area.

Six-year-old Ruth told Bradley Stoke Matters: “Visiting the foodbank made me think about other children. I want to help them and everyone should have toys to play with.”

2nd Stoke Gifford Rainbows assistant leader Michelle Picton added: “We work hard with the girls to encourage them to think about their community.

“This is a perfect way for them to do something visible and positive in their area, and something to be proud of for years to come.

“We really hope people will be able to come forward and help us make the girls’ ideas a reality.”
