Former sailor wins £1m scratchcard
A former Merchant Navy sailor has won £1m after buying a National Lottery scratchcard from his local Co-op in Southville.
75-year-old Alan Wilcock is a retiree who previously spent 15 years working as a sailor for the Merchant Navy.
While travelling with the Merchant Navy, Alan was able to enjoy live rock music at several venues across the world and has seen the Rolling Stones 26 times over the years.
He incorporated his nautical roots into his National Lottery triumph by celebrating the win at the SS Great Britain.

Alan bought the winning scratchcard from his local Co-op on Coronation Road.
He said he started shaking when he realised he had won and, after getting over the shock, decided to keep the scratchcard safe in a plastic sleeve because it was “too special to let go”.
He explained: “When I realised I’d won, everything changed in an instant.
“I’ve gone from being careful with my pension to having choices I never thought I’d have again.
“It’s not just about what I can buy, it’s also about ensuring I can continue to enjoy my independence and freedom to live life on my own terms.”

Alan currently relies on a mobility scooter to get around and now plans to use at least some of his earnings on a “new set of wheels”.
He said: “My current one does the job to an extent but now I have the means to choose exactly the right one for me, with cost being no object.”
He added: “I know that I want to use the winnings to enjoy life, and that starts with a party for my friends.
“I’ll hire a place, put my card behind the bar and simply say to everyone ‘Enjoy!’ It’ll be a great night and we’ll be raising a few glasses of Guinness, toasting the win and my friends.”
