Bristol to move from tier three to tier two
Health secretary Matt Hancock has brought unexpected Christmas cheer to Bristol as he announced that Bristol would move out of the tightest coronavirus restrictions on Saturday.
The number of confirmed cases in Bristol has dropped dramatically to fall below the national average, with the city gaining praise from health secretary Matt Hancock for the “sacrifices made” to achieve this progress.
The announcement will come as a relief to the many businesses that have been forced to close under the tier three restrictions at what will for many the busiest time of the year.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Hancock said: “I am pleased to say that some places can go down a tier. In Bristol and North Somerset cases have come down from 432 per 100,000 to 121 and falling. I can therefore announce that Bristol and North Somerset will come out of tier three into tier two from Saturday.”
Hancock said that Bristol could be an example for the rest of England. He said: “Where we’ve seen areas pull together and come out of tier three it’s where everyone has taken responsibility upon themselves to make that happen.”
The Government has said an easing of rules over Christmas will still go ahead despite pressure to scrap the break. Under the festive bubble rules, up to three households will be allowed to mix between December 23 and 27.
