Exploring burnout and wellbeing in the workplace

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday May 5, 2021

In a free event taking place on May 13, Bristol24/7 and expert panellists will discuss how the city’s response to burnout could make Bristol a leader in workplace wellbeing.

With workers having to juggle their jobs and childcare, many facing furlough, Zoom fatigue, isolation and job losses, the last year has taken its toll.

Many employers are still catching up with what these shifts in working mean for staff wellbeing. Bristol24/7 will explore how the city can become a world leader in workplace wellness.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Jess Borthwick from Changes Bristol, Daisy Roach, head of HR at Better Food, Bianca Jones from EDP Traning and Camilla Rigby, co-founder of the Women’s Work Lab, will talk with Bristol24/7’s Safiya Bashir about the topic.

“I’ve designed and delivered mental health and wellbeing training for the last four years to companies and individuals and there is a common theme of not taking care of one’s self, not setting boundaries or replenishing our batteries,” says Bianca.

“There is a huge reluctance around this as some people say this feels lazy, selfish or self-indulgent. I advocate that its neither and its actually vital for our survival in this current busy world. It’s almost like we need to do a software update on our brains, download some resilience and upload some self care.”

Discussions range from digital exclusion and the lack of informal support for mental health during lockdown to how parents need flexibility to support their children and the office as a safe space for people living with domestic abuse.

Staff from around Bristol will also give their thoughts in a video. With experts speaking from organisations including Weston College, Paranimo and both local universities, video contributors will discuss what they think needs to change and what some of the biggest challenges of the last year have been.

With employers in the city already pioneering mental health initiatives and academics working in Bristol, the event next Thursday aims to promote positive action and help businesses lead the way in fostering a healthy, productive workforce and avoiding workplace burnout.

Sign up for the free event for an hour and a half of insightful discussion and recommendations to create a healthy workplace.
