Bristol Charity Advent Calendar – day 21

By Bristol24/7  Monday Dec 19, 2016

Nearly half of us will use the justice system at some point, but imagine using it alone, fighting for custody of your children.

The Personal Support Unit offers support for people involved in civil and family court cases without the use of a lawyer. Clients often have little resources to support themselves and many suffer from multiple disadvantage.

The charity opened in Bristol in 2014 and it helps more than 200 people to represent themselves better for a fair hearing and a better access to justice, every day the courts are open.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

It is estimated that of all the people appearing in private family cases, half do so alone, and it is the same in many civil court cases. The PSU thinks it’s wrong for people to face opposition with lawyers when they can’t access one themself, and they aim to respond.

This Christmas, The PSU has set up an appeal on their website running until January 2017 to raise money to meet the costs of a 20 per cent increase in the number of people using their services.

Every day during Advent, Bristol24/7 will be focusing on a Bristol charity that you can support. If you want to see a charity featured, please email [email protected]
