The Gourmet Sandwich Club

By Martin Booth  Monday Nov 3, 2014

The first rule of The Gourmet Sandwich Club is: you do not talk about The Gourmet Sandwich Club. The second rule of The Gourmet Sandwich Club is: you do not talk about The Gourmet Sandwich Club.

Except I’ve now broken these rules by writing about this most intriguing of lunchtime offerings in Bristol.

But it isn’t actually a secret. The Gourmet Sandwich Club may be furtive, but they are still a business and by the look of the sandwiches stacked up in the foyer of Hamilton House on Stokes Croft last Friday there are already a good number of people who are members of the club.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The real rules are simple. One, choose your sandwich by posting on their Facebook page. Two, pay the £7.50 for your sandwich via Paypal. Three, head to Hamilton House to pick up your order.

Expecting just a sandwich, balanced on top of a small cardboard box was a chocolate cookie festooned with half a dozen raspberries. And if that wasn’t enough, there was also a bottle of homemade cherry cordial.

My own sandwich choice was Bombay lamb steak with a mint yogurt and honey coleslaw in a toasted roll. And it was mighty good, with plenty of filling packed in to the soft roll but not too many so that all its constituent parts did not spill out as I ate it sat down on one of the new benches in the Bearpit.

The other two options on the day I become a member of the club were three cheese Portobella mushroom, mushroom baked in parmesan and mozzarella, served on a toasted roll with grilled halloumi, caramelised onion chutney and rocket; and steak served on a bed of stilton and spinach with caramelised onion chutney.

Only currently operating on a Friday, The Gourmet Sandwich Club should become the talk of the town. They are on a short break at the moment but will return on November 14 at their new home of the pop-up art gallery at 87 Stokes Croft.
