New-look Flexitarian Awards hit the city

By Niamh Walton  Friday Jun 15, 2018

Back in October 2016, the Flexitarian Award was introduced by Flexitarian Bristol. The award has recently been redesigned and relaunched, and now more restaurants than ever have received the accolade.

Run by a group of individuals who champion and celebrate restaurants in Bristol that have diverse menus, plant-based food consumption is on the rise, and as a green city, the Flexitarian Bristol group wants to make sure that the rise of ‘flexitarians’ – those committed to decreasing the amount of meat, fish or dairy products they consume without labelling themselves as vegetarian or vegan, is being embraced.

The ever-rising popularity of concepts including Meat Free Mondays means that many people enjoy the benefits  of a vegetarian lifestyle, but if they fancy a burger, they won’t deny themselves one.

The Flexitarian Awards being handed out around Bristol are bronze, silver and gold depending on the amounts of meat that the restaurant serves, while if a restaurant has a completely meat-free menu they can receive a green award. Restaurants can also receive awards if they source the meat they use sustainably.

One restaurant in Bristol that has received the highest award, gold, is No 1 Harbourside. Their menu is almost completely meat-free, with the only non-vegetarian meals under the heading ‘Meat as a Treat’.
