Fish and chip shop celebrates 35th anniversary

By Mary Milton  Tuesday Sep 19, 2023

A fish and chip shop is celebrating 35 years of serving customers in Stoke Bishop and Sea Mills.

The small row of shops known as Trym Parade has seen a lot of changes over the years, but Simply Fish has been a constant since 1988.

The current owner Yahya Nassiri, known to locals as ‘John’, took over the business 19 years ago. Both him and the shop’s manager, Carla Haslett, live locally.

John has been trying some new ideas at the takeaway, which now opens at 9am six days a week for breakfast and has a couple of tables where customers can sit outside.

Despite a number of other establishments opening close by,  John says his customers, some of whom have been using the takeaway for years, have remained loyal.

“Our customers are wonderful. Around here Friday is still fish day, it’s our busiest day,” John said.

The businessman says he was delighted with the response when he posted about the anniversary on a local Facebook group.

“Lots of people commented, including one guy who worked in the shop when he was 16,” he added.

On the anniversary day itself, John and Carla were celebrating by providing free chips with every order over £5.

For Debbie Pritchard, who popped in for her supper after a trip to the supermarket, this is her favourite local chippy.

“If we are having fish and chips, we always have them from here,” she said.
