The Crafty Egg – cafe review

By Martin Booth  Monday Apr 11, 2016

DJ Derek looks down on the customers in The Good Egg on Stokes Croft. Literally. A black and white pencil illustration of the dearly departed DJ is one of four portraits on one wall, others include Jeff the Big Issue seller, and a well-known local street sweeper.

More characters can be spotted from this new cafe overlooking the Carriageworks. Spend only a few minutes in the window seats and you’ll spot a whole cast of characters.

The Crafty Egg has taken on what was most recently Hooper House, whose owner Andy now runs Beyond the Wall within The Triathlon Shop on the harbourside.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

New owners Ben and Kate have been in for a few weeks now but have only just changed the name above the door, with hopes to use the basement room as an events space once tidied up.

As the name suggests, eggs feature prominently on the menu: scrambled, Afghan-style or with kale. Bagels and pancake stacks have also been popular.

Eggs have also gone into cakes on the counter which on a recent visit included lemon drizzle, peanut butter, chocolate and salted caramel, and a bakewell slice.

As Alt J played on the stereo, two friends lounged on comfy sofas in one corner, gossiping between sips of coffee; on a large wooden table a woman dressed all in black was illuminated by her laptop screen; while another woman with shoulder length blonde hair bit her nails before inspiration struck and her borrowed pen made neat notes in a pad.

Overlooked by a cast of characters, The Crafty Egg is slowly developing a character of all its own.
