Surf, sustainability and live music on lineup for new North Devon festival

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Mar 15, 2022

The festival season is set to make a welcome return this summer with another new event on the lineup – this time down the road in North Devon.

The Wavelength Spring Classic combines surfing, skating, live music, fire cooking feasts and more for a celebration at Woolacombe Bay on May 27-30.

Hot Chip will close the show on the main stage on Saturday with a DJ set, preceded by electronic group Crazy P, while The Nextmen, featuring Dynamite MC, headline the Sunday. The musical lineup also includes Porij, Anchorsong, Falle Nioke, Far Caspian and Low Island, as well as local artists including shanty crew Anchor’s Aweigh.

Organised by the team behind Wavelength surf magazine and the Blue Earth Summit in Bristol, the Spring Classic has a big focus on sustainability.

Organisers say they are aiming for a single plastic-free site and have pledged one per cent of their event ticket revenue to local community projects. They have also been working with the National Trust to develop what will be the first event of its kind in the Devon beauty spot for many years.

Event director Linley Lewis says: “Wavelength has a 40-year heritage with an engaged audience and we’re really excited to bring together all the key components we see for the perfect weekend in one of the most beautiful spots in the country.”

To minimise the impact of increased traffic, organisers say they are providing an incentive for people to carpool, will put on a bus service from Barnstaple train station and are encouraging to people to arrive by bicycle or motorbike.
