The week in jazz – June 20-26

By Tony Benjamin  Monday Jun 20, 2016

There’s an interesting contrast next Sunday (26) when classically-informed Swiss trio VEIN (above)and riotously dance-leaning Israelis The Apples arrive at the Hen & Chicken and Fleece respectively. VEIN’s 2015 gig at St George’s with Dave Liebman was a masterclass in the empathetic group playing that’s given them a truly international standing, while The Apples’ annual visits are a guaranteed sweat-session of funk and dance grooves. Take your pick!

John Martin (pic Ellen Tovey)

Earlier in the week F-ire Collective saxophonist John Martin unveils his Hidden Notes  project at Future Inn (Thursday 23). John’s been working for some time on the potential of the saxophone to reveal multiple notes, hence the name, and this classy London-based quintet builds their sound around their use in looping rhythmic structures, thanks to some impressive circular breathing technique from the saxophonist himself.

Percussionist Ivan Moreno brings some (hopefully) summer-friendly Latin grooves to both the Grupo Ritmo trio (Canteen, Wednesday 22) and the mighty K’Chevere (pictured above, No 1 Harbourside, Saturday 25). It’s a rare opportunity to catch the latter, for many years Bristol’s premier salsa-jazz combo, who combine great musicianship with an authentic Cuban sound.

Victoria Klewin

Regular favourites John Pearce & Dave Newton return to The Fringe (Wednesday 22) with John’s mercurial violin superbly balanced by Dave’s perfectly judged piano and Kasabian drummer Ian Matthews joining Will Harris’ bass in the rhythm section. And there’s a couple of interesting vocalists at Canteen this week, too, with ‘The Voice’ star Celestine showcasing her soul and gospel influenced jazz on Friday (24) and Victoria Klewin joining the powerhouse trio of Andy Christie (guitar), John-paul Gard (Hammond) and Eddie John (drums) for some ‘cruising jazz boogie inspired by the great Mose Allison and others. They’re calling the project Flat Earth for reasons only they know.
