Review: Aba Shanti-I, Trinity Centre
As soon as you walked into the middle of the dance, Maasai Warrior Soundsystems , stacked in each corner, blasted dub that you feel go straight through your entire body. It was like magic, as the Trinity Centre was transformed into an authentic sound system dance.
Teachings in Dub supplied nothing but meditative, weighty bass throughout as Aba Shanti-I & Maasai Warrior went head to head, blowing people away with their stacks and dubplates.
As the night proceeded, the musical energy contributed to the aura of a traditional 1980’s sound system dance. I couldn’t help but notice the crowds freedom of expression through movement, it was almost spiritual. Rootsy dub kept the dance packed pretty much throughout with everyone feeling in a way that can only be done in that kind of authentic setting – eyes closed, knees bent, bass heavy.
Although the music was literally breathtaking, there was also a sense of unity; there was no segregation between the selectors and the crowd. No stage, no spot light, just pure organic vibes. All I could see and feel was peace, love and big smiles.
