Oliver Stone comes to Bristol in January

By Robin Askew  Monday Dec 13, 2021

One of the foremost – and most outspoken – American film directors, Oliver Stone published his autobiography Chasing the Light: How I Fought My Way Into Hollywood back in July. As one might expect, it’s a rip-snorting, no-holds-barred read offering an eye-opening romp through his formative years and the triumphs and tribulations of writing and/or directing those great movies (Scarface, JFK, Natural Born Killers, Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, Midnight Express, etc) and, er, some not-so-great ones (Alexander, U Turn).

On January 15 2022, he’ll be at St. George’s for a conversation with Bristol Festival of Ideas director Andrew Kelly. There’s certainly no shortage of controversial topics available for discussion, from Ollie’s flirting with conspiracy theory to his novel opinions on figures ranging from Hitler and Stalin to Julian Assange and Vladimir Putin. And, of course, his latest film: the documentary JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass.

The ever-swelling ranks of the easily offended may find that a ringing endorsement of Chasing the Light by Sir Anthony Hopkins, who starred in Stone’s Nixon biopic, also acts as a handy trigger warning: “Stone rattles cages. He pricks the bubbles of the namby-pambies. He provokes outrage. He stirs up controversy. He has no respect for safe places. Oliver Stone is larger than life.”
