Possibly because the sun made its brief annual appearance, it was rather a quiet weekend at the UK box office. This permitted the fourth film in the Planet of the Apes reboot series, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, to claim the top spot with a franchise-low opening haul of £3.8m. Previous chart toppers The Fall Guy, Challengers and Back to Black all dipped dramatically, while retaining their places in the top five. Arthouse release La Chimera was the only other film to make the top ten, but low overall takings meant that a couple of event cinema releases were able to sneak into the chart: NT Live’s surreal Nye, starring Martin Sheen as Nye Bevan, has now taken more than £1m thanks to ‘encore’ screenings, while the Met Opera’s production of Madama Butterfly squeezed Love Lies Bleeding into tenth place.
