Just the one story this week. Anyone who’s lost interest in superheroes altogether is clearly in a minority, as Captain Marvel hoovered up most of the weekend’s cinemagoing quids. Indeed, Marvel’s latest superhero flick took more than twice as much as everything else in the top ten. Only Fighting with My Family, in its second week on release, managed to haul in more than £1m. That £12.8m opening comfortably trounces Black Panther‘s £10.5m three-day start last year. It also sees Ms. Marvel grab the niche record for the best opening for a film that introduces a single new character to what our nerdy chums refer to as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What’s more, it gives us an excuse to use a lovely, clickbaity picture of a pussy cat. Awwwww…

At the foot of the chart, Alita: Battle Angel suffered most, dropping a whopping 70%, and now stands no chance of reaching the £10m mark. Outside the top ten, there was better news for Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s thriller Everybody Knows, which scored the third highest screen average of the weekend. Locally, this one’s release has now been expanded. It opens at the Cinema De lux on Friday. See our comprehensive film listings for details.
