Chalk up another flop. Men in Black International enjoyed the lowest opening of any film in the franchise and failed to topple Disney’s Aladdin, which topped the chart for the fourth consecutive week – the first film this year to do so. Also underperforming in the franchise stakes are X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which suffered the biggest fall of any film in the top ten, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In fact, the only franchise flick to hold its end up is John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum, whose takings have now surpassed those of the previous two films combined. Don’t expect the studios to be shedding too many tears, mind. Their focus is now firmly on the global market, especially China, which probably explains why blockbusters are getting even dumber with minimal dialogue. (“Go!” “Run!” etc). The only other new entry this week was Asif Kapadia’s Diego Maradona, which chalked up the highest screen average of any film outside the top five and is currently the clear choice for blockbuster naysayers and arthouse audiences.
