Did we ever mention how Disney has come to completely dominate the global box office, thanks to its animation franchises and ownership of Marvel? Last weekend, the studio scored another huge hit with its live action adaptation of The Lion King. That £16.7m haul puts it just behind Avengers: Endgame as the second biggest opener of the year. Oh, and Avengers: Endgame – another Disney release, needless to say – has just overtaken Avatar to become the biggest global release of all time, with an eye-waterting total of £2.23bn in the kitty. Away from all those vast mountains of loot, it’s pleasing to see that audiences aren’t all Apolloed out by wall-to-wall TV coverage of the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing (idiot conspiracy theorists have their own web channel). Superlative documentary Apollo 11 has now taken more than £1m in the UK. If you’ve yet to see this one, both the Watershed and Showcase Cinema De Lux have just retained it for another week.
