Sugary nanny Emily Blunt held off the challenge from gouty, Golden Globe winning monarch Olivia Colman as Mary Poppins Returns enjoyed a third week at the top, sailing past the £30m mark. But Yorgos Lanthimos won’t be too disappointed as The Favourite became his biggest UK box office hit on takings from previews alone, before its official Friday opening. Also setting yet another record was bouffant-haired ‘king of the waltz’ Andre Rieu. Mature punters flocked to the broadcast of his New Year show in such numbers that it became the UK’s biggest ever concert release, breaking the record previously set by, er, Andre Rieu last summer. Eat yer hearts out boy bands and stadium rockers! Overall, it was another bumper weekend at the UK box office, with each of the top six films taking more than £1m. That said, Boxing Day releases Bumblebee and Holmes & Watson both took big tumbles, and Welcome to Marwen failed to chart. It’s too early to say whether Bohemian Rhapsody‘s surprise Golden Globes win will boost box office, but local cinemas have been adding plenty of screenings in anticipation and the singalong version is out on Friday. It’s also just overtaken The Greatest Showman. Outside the chart, the big stealth hit of the moment is palm-moistening climbing flick Free Solo, which has taken more than £1m since December. The Watershed keeps adding screenings of this one and they keep selling out.
