Sure as night follows day, a new Marvel flick opens and a string of box office records tumble. With a whopping haul of £29.4m over a four day “weekend”, Avengers: Infinity War is officially the biggest April opener of all time in the UK. It also enjoyed the UK’s biggest ever Saturday and is ranked third in the all-time Fri-Sun totals (at least until the new Star Wars flick turns up next month). In case you’re wondering about all those qualifiers, that’s because the Bond movie Spectre remains by far the biggest UK opener on account of its ‘opening weekend’ lasting for a full seven days. Infinity War scooped up 78% of box office takings from Friday to Sunday, as punters who like their blockbusters loud and action-packed deserted Rampage, which fell from first to fourth place. But those who don’t share this enthusiasm were well catered for with some canny counter-programming. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society enjoyed a 19% boost during its second week on release, rising to second place. Atypically noiseless horror A Quiet Place, meanwhile, continues to do a roaring trade as a result of strong word of mouth.
