Sam Taylor-Johnson’s syrupy and evasive Amy Winehouse flick Back to Black becomes the latest music biopic box office hit. But perhaps some fans have been deterred by the poor reviews as that £2.7m opening puts it behind the likes of Bob Marley: One Love, Rocketman and genre champ Bohemian Rhapsody. In second place, the rather more enthusiastically received Civil War scored a career-best result for director Alex Garland. All the other English-language films in the chart simply shuffled down a place behind the new openers. But it’s farewell to Wicked Little Letters after eight weeks. With nearly £10m in the kitty, this now ranks as one of the highest-grossing UK films released since the pandemic.
