Preview: #nobinary, Glitch

By Lowie Trevena  Thursday Jun 20, 2019

Javier Tanke is a Spanish artist based in Bristol and his latest exhibition, #nobinary, will show at Glitch in Old Market throughout July.

Challenging preconceptions about gender and sexuality, it’s an important and ever-relevant exhibition to show at the concept salon during Bristol’s Pride month.

Exploring the relationship between gender, identity and pop culture, #nobinary will showcase a series of limited edition screen prints, and is described as “direct visual assault on our moral lens” by the artist.

Inspired by Javier’s time living in Hong Kong, where LGBTQ+ culture remains taboo, the artist took a decade to complete during his time a resident at Spike Island, where he is still based.

The prints are vibrant and colourful, both fun and interesting to view, as well as a statement on freedom of choice and social norms.

“I want to spark a conversation about the universality of sex and gender, and of love itself to challenge its accepted formats,” says Javier.

LGBTQ+ rights continue to make headlines in 2019. When it appears that every news story about queer rights is a step backwards, a though-provoking exhibition such as Javier’s is as important and as relevant as ever, and he says: “#nobinary is a statement about love as a pure and universal right of which all of us are entitled.”
