Lion painted by Ronnie Wood goes on display in Bristol

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Aug 10, 2021

A life-sized lion in south Bristol is part of a global art installation in support of African conservation.

The lion at Ashton Gate Stadium as part of the Tusk Lion Trail has been painted by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.

It’s one of almost 50 sculptures now in place across the globe, including New York, Sydney and Nairobi.

Bristol Sport owner Stephen Lansdown said that “it’s an honour for Ashton Gate Stadium to play its part in the global campaign”.

He said: “Each sculpture highlights the magnificence of lions and educates about the threats to their existence – raising awareness for conservation efforts across the world.

“The population of African lions has declined by as much as 50 per cent in the last 25 years, so the risk to Africa’s unique natural heritage remains more urgent than ever.

“We hope visitors across the West Country come to Ashton Gate to enjoy our iconic lion sculpture and support the work of Tusk.”
