Jamaican Pulse comes to the RWA
The Royal West of England Academy has been awarded funding for a new exhibition focusing on the diversity and talent of Jamaican visual artists.
Supported by Arts Council England, Jamaican Pulse: Art and Politics from Jamaica and the Diaspora aims to celebrate and showcase the legacy of Jamaican art, with a collection of contemporary artwork alongside key works from the country’s cultural history.
The exhibited work will span multiple disciplines including painting, sculpture, photography, textiles and moving image, and will be supported by twentieth century artwork from a number of public and private collections, including the Jamaican High Commission and The National Gallery of Jamaica in Kingston.
Funding will also support a range of accompanying learning and participation activities that will take place on-site and at various venues around Bristol, and will aim to engage the city’s diverse BME communities.
Jamaican high commissioner Aloun N’Dombet-Assamba said: “In recent years, the Jamaican Government and its partner institutions have collaborated with counterparts in Bristol on literature and heritage projects, including the visit of our Poet Laureate Professor Mervyn Morris and the ongoing exchange between museums, so I am confident that Jamaican Pulse will help to cement the cultural relationship between Jamaica and Bristol and leave a lasting legacy.”
