A multi-sensory art experience is coming to the Arnolfini

By Robin Connolly  Thursday Aug 12, 2021

The Arnolfini has created a new and accessible way to explore visual art in a major new collaboration with artists, writers and guest speakers.

These “intimate and interactive events” will take place over a whole day, inviting visitors to harness their senses, imagination and memory, focussing on the abstract painting of Frank Bowling.

Devised by Gaylene Gould of The Space to Come, the afternoon’s events will include three ‘feeling tours’, which will use stillness, reflection and conversation, allowing people to explore their senses and feelings towards the art.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

In the evening, visitors will experience Bowling’s creative works by relaxing and resting in either seated or lying positions, led by choreographer Raquel Meseguer and musician Jamie McCarthy.

Throughout the day there will also be opportunities to process their responses to these novel approaches in conversation with colour theorist and director of the Centre for Fine Print Research, Dr Carinna Parraman.

Multidisciplinary artist and writer Valda Jackson will also be holding a writing workshop to give space for creative expression.

How Do You Feel? will take place on Saturday – three feeling tours will run from 11am-5.40pm, and two improvised rest sessions will take place between 6.30pm and 8pm.
