Veteran US indie director Kelly Reichardt follows Meek’s Cutoff and Night Moves with another feminist drama that’s attracted a great female cast. This includes Laura Dern, returning Meek’s Cutoff star Michelle Williams (recently Oscar nominated for Manchester by the Sea) and Kristen Stewart, who proved there’s rather more to her than feeble tweenie vampire flicks in Clouds of Sils Maria.
Certain Women is based on short stories from Maile Meloy‘s Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It, exploring the intersecting lives of three women in Montana. Newcomers to Reichardt’s work should perhaps be warned that not for nothing has she been dubbed “the mistress of minimalism” and her slow pacing may not be to all tastes.
