Waitrose to open first South West distribution hub in Bristol
Supermarket giant Waitrose has announced plans to open its first South West distribution hub in Bristol.
The new distribution centre, located in Avonmouth, is expected to create more than 550 jobs in the region and will be operated by logistics firm DHL.
Recruitment is expected to begin in spring, with 480 warehouse roles and 80 driver positions to be filled.
The distribution centre forms part of Waitrose’s £1bn multi-year investment to transform its supply chain and support growth across its store network.

The site is designed to improve delivery efficiency for the retailer’s 50 existing South West stores while supporting future expansion.

A flagship store is also expected to open in the Brabazon development in north Bristol in 2027.
The 360,000 sq ft centre has been rated BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ and will feature solar panels, energy-efficient systems and landscaped green spaces.
The supermarket group estimates the site will reduce annual CO₂ emissions by more than 2,200 tonnes through more efficient deliveries.
Alison Maffin, Waitrose’s supply chain director, said: “As we grow, it’s essential that our supply chain grows with us.
“This new site strengthens our network, ensuring consistent service for our customers and creating over 550 jobs in a state-of-the-art facility. DHL shares our commitment to sustainable logistics, making them the perfect partner for this next phase of our expansion.”
The site is due to open in early 2027.
