Mix Radio closes

By Laura Collacott  Monday Feb 22, 2016

Bristol music streaming service MixRadio is to close just a year after being bought by Japanese messaging service LINE

The future of its 180 staff at the Wine Street offices is unsure.

Following several changes of hands, LINE bought the service in 2014 after it was released by previous owner Microsoft when the company began to cut budgets in its entertainment departments. LINE planned to expand the app from Nokia and Windows devices – which Microsoft’s ownership had previously tied it to – to include Apple and Android tech, promoting the service among its 200m Asian users and making a push in the States.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

But it failed to take off, despite an attractive design overhaul, and a hike in already-expensive royalty fees along with changed corporate strategies have seen the service come to an end.

A statement from LINE said: “After a careful assessment of the subsidiary’s overall performance, the financial challenges posed by the music streaming market, and priorities of LINE Corporation, LINE has determined that future growth would be difficult to ensure and decided to discontinue the MixRadio music streaming service.

“LINE and the MixRadio team would like to thank the users of MixRadio for all of their support of the service.”
