What could be more #MeToo/F-rated/post-Weinstein timely than a Ghostbusters-style all-female spin-off from the lucrative Ocean’s heist flick franchise? This one’s actually been in the works since 2015 and, for all its much-touted feminist credentials, is written and directed by a bloke (Gary Ross, whose credits include Free State of Jones and the first Hunger Games flick).
Sandra Bullock is cast as Danny Ocean’s estranged sister Debbie, who assembles a lady crew to pull off – you guessed it – the ‘heist of the century’ at New’s York’s prestigious Met Gala. Her seven criminal associates are played by Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and the US rapper/comedian who goes by the name of Awkwafina. It’s fair to say that some feminist commentators detect a certain cynicism at work here, funnelling female talent into relatively risk-free gender-swap remakes rather than financing original projects by creative women.
