Just a tad less prolific than he used to be, Audition and Ichi the Killer director Takashi Miike returns with a heart-warming romance (his 103rd film, fact fans) released on Valentine’s Day. I jest, obviously. It’s a pleasingly blood-drenched, deranged and energetic crime comedy that opens with a decapitation and doesn’t let up.

At its core is the romance between a terminally ill orphaned boxer and our old chum the drug addict tart-with-a-heart, who find themselves pursued through Tokyo by sundry ne’er-do-wells. The best of these, who may assuage your feminist qualms, is a bloodlust-crazed swordswoman splendidly played by mononymous Japanese actress/model/popster Becky.
