The Notebook

Director
Nick Cassavetes
Certificate
12A
Running Time
124 mins

Nick Cassavetes directs this earnest tearjerker, adapted from the novel by Nicholas Sparks. It tells twin tales of love: of a young guy from a poor background who falls for a gorgeous girl from a rich family in the 1940s, and of the old man in a nursing home who recounts their story to his elderly female companion.

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams paint a touching picture of young love in the period story within the film.  James Garner and Gena Rowlands (the director’s mum), meanwhile, are as good as you would expect as the OAPs for whom love burns as strongly as ever. Cinephiles hoping that Cassavetes might be reaching for some of the edgy, indie cool his father John achieved will be disappointed
