When Turkish-German medical student Asli (Canan Kir) meets middle-class Lebanese immigrant Saeed (Roger Azar), it’s love at first sight and the couple decide to marry in secret. But then Saeed starts to come over all intolerantly Islamist and starts disappearing off to Yemen for extended periods.
Told from Asli’s perspective, German director Anne Zohra Berrached‘s romantic drama is based on the real-life story of United 93 hijacker Ziad Jarrah. The Guardian was not persuaded by what it described as a “heavy-handed attempt to humanise a 9/11 terrorist”.
The Watershed’s screenings include a pre-recorded extended introduction hosted by Birds’ Eye View director-at-large Mia Bays with Anne Zohra Berrached.
