Gene Kelly wasn’t available, so Marlon Brando got his only musical role (he also sings the Frank Loesser songs himself), in which he plays inveterate gambler Sky Masterson. To win some much needed loot, Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) bets Masterson that he can’t get a date with virtuous, demure Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons).
It’s back on screen in newly restored form as part of the BFI musicals season and to conclude the Watershed’s December run of hoofing Sunday brunches.
