In what must qualify as the very definition of ‘niche appeal’, the Watershed’s January Sunday brunch season is devoted to Melodia! Musicals from Russia and the Caucasus, which also forms part of the ongoing BFI Musicals season.
It kicks off with this stirring 1950 box office hit celebration of life on the Soviet Union’s collective farms. Cossacks of Kuban is a steppe-set Romeo and Juliet-style yarn charting the forbidden love between a dashing horse breeder and a hottie collective farmer. You also have the opportunity to sing along with such choons as How Have You Been, Dearest? and Oh, the Kalina Flowers are in Bloom.
