The Secret of Marrowbone

Director
Sergio G. Sánchez
Certificate

Running Time
110 mins

Yet another English-language horror flick from a Spanish writer/director. Sergio G. Sánchez wrote both The Orphanage and The Impossible for his fellow countryman J.A. Bayona and now strikes out on his own with this sumptuous period ghost story, which recalls The Others and Guillermo Del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone.

Set in late sixties America but shot entirely in Spain, it follows a British woman who returns to her spooky childhood home for a fresh start with her four nippers. But when she keels over, the oldest lad (George McKay) decides to keep her demise a secret in order to prevent the siblings being separated. Trouble is, someone’s out to kill them and the sprawling manor house appears to be haunted. Some US critics found a couple of the many twists a tad implausible, but the film garnered mostly positive reviews.
