The Babadook

Director
Jennifer Kent
Certificate

Running Time
94 mins

Australian director Jennifer Kent‘s cracking debut feature: an expansion of her award winning short, Monster. It’s about a mysterious pop-up book called Mister Babadook that appears in the home of a single mother and her disruptive son. The tome’s eponymous creepy critter is promptly invited into their home, where unpleasantness ensues. This is a beautifully designed film, with puppetry and stop-motion animation in place of ubiquitous soulless CGI, fulfilling its crap-scaring obligations while also touching on deeper themes. Head over here for our full review.

It’s back on screen as part of the ‘shed’s very welcome July Haunted Houses Sunday brunch season to complement the release of Hereditary.
