Presented as part of the Cables & Cameras: Inspired weekend of events, screenings and talks – both online and offline – highlighting and encouraging the work of black and POC filmmakers, this is the local premiere of Bristol filmmaker and Mandem founder Elias Williams new horror short, Voodoo in My Heart, which was recently unveiled at Frightfest.
The film tells the story of a young woman’s last moments in human form before turning into a zombie. “Ultimately, Voodoo in My Heart aims to place Haitian Vodou, a religion born from African spiritual practices during the slave-trade, back at the centre of the zombie genre,” explaisn Elias. “Without Haiti and its fascinating Vodou religion, it’s very likely that zombie movies wouldn’t exist today. This film encourages us to remember and respect the origins of the genre.”
The screening will be followed by a conversation with Bristol Black Horror Club’s Adam Murray, exploring ‘Horror Noire’, the Zombie and its Haitian roots.
