Part two of the anaemic, tweenie-targeted vampire saga and, as the certificate might suggest, Mormon author Stephenie Meyer’s subext remains one of restraint and chastity, the vampiric themes being mere cyphers for the developing sexuality of her female protagonist Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) who remains devoted to brooding bloodsucker Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). But he has decided that the only way he can protect Bella from the fate that awaits her is by leaving. Her hunky friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) is keen to step into the breach, and while initially reluctant to let anyone get close she soon finds herself warming to him. Whole plot points and unsuspected back stories are revealed as the film rattles through a plot that ends leaving the way clear for the next film, in the manner of a rather bloodless television melodrama. Fans wanting to see the literary adventure brought to life, while swooning at the competing heartthrobs of wan Pattinson and buff Lautner, won’t be disappointed.
