Fanny Liatard’s feature debut is set against the backdrop of the real-life demolition of Cité Gagarine – a vast red brick housing project on the outskirts of Paris. Young resident Yuri (Alseni Bathily) dreams of becoming an astronaut like his Soviet cosmonaut namesake Yuri Gagarin, after whom the project is also named. But when thje demolition plans are made public, our hero joins forces with his chums to save it. In a fantastical twist, he transforms the estate into his very own ‘starship’.
This will not be to all tastes, as Jonathan Romney noted in his Screen Daily review: “Gagarine’s increasingly wayward trajectory demands of its audience not just a leap of faith but a vault into the stratosphere, and its tone of naïve romanticism could rankle with more jaded viewers. Still, conviction and chutzpah, plus often dazzling execution, will chime with younger adult audiences.”
