Free Guy

Director
Shawn Levy
Certificate
12A
Running Time
115 mins

Guy (Ryan Reynolds) becomes aware that he’s a non-player background character – a bank teller, to be precise – in a computer game. Naturally, he decides to take action to promote himself to the role of hero. But he’s locked in a race against time before the developers can shut it down.

Director Shawn Levy has form with this kind of thing, having directed the Night at the Museum series. That means existentialism takes a back seat to action in this enjoyable Truman Show-lite romp. It’s been acclaimed as the best ever video game film – which is not, admittedly, saying much. But as the Hollywood Reporter‘s reviewer remarked: “Reynolds’ boundless appeal, the frequently witty screenplay and expertly rendered technical aspects make the film enjoyable summer frivolity.”
