In a fairytale kingdom, the randy monarch (Jean Marais, star of Cocteau’s La Belle et La Bete) promises his missus on her deathbed that he will never remarry except to a woman as beautiful as she. There’s just the one candidate: their scrumptious princess daughter (Catherine Deneuve)…

Jacques Demy‘s very French Freudian fairytale from 1970 is adapted from a lesser-known story by Charles Perrault, who gave us the likes of Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood. It’s all a bit twee, despite the incestuous subtext, though Delphine Seyrig steals the film in the traditional fairy godmother role.
