Scarlett Johansson‘s Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow gets her own spin-off movie – the 24th instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if you’re counting. It’s also directed by a woman (Australian Cate Shortland, who gave us Somersault and Berlin Syndrome), which may yet become so commonplace that we’ll have to stop remarking on it.

Like Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, however, Ms. Johansson is still obliged to squeeze into a figure-hugging outfit – but, hey, there’s only so much progress the superhero genre can take. Plotwise, this one takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War and sees our heroine forced to scarper alone and face a conspiracy linked to her past. Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz pop up as fellow Black Widows along the way.
