Even easily pleased comicbook nerds agreed that Suicide Squad was crap. But it took a shitload of loot at the global box office, so the ‘DC Extended Universe’ rumbles on. As the title suggests, this spin-off – the eighth in the series if you’re counting – centres on Margot Robbie‘s criminal-turned-vigilante Harley Quinn, who previously operated in the shadow of the Joker. (That’s the Jared Leto version, not the Joaquin Phoenix one – do try to keep up: there’s a test at the end.)
This being the Time’s Up era, Warners have taken the refreshing/opportunistic (you decide) decision to have her ditch the grinning japester and assemble her own girl gang with Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). The villain is a fella (Ewan McGregor‘s dastardly Black Mask) who threatens a young girl. You may wish to note that the writer and director are both women. Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson supplied the script, while Cathy Yan has achieved the distinction of becoming the first female Asian director to direct a superhero flick.
